FAMILY CENTER NEWS
The Building Committee proposes to modify original scope of project to a multi-phased renovation mode.
Excerpt of full letter below:

"In looking at the essential needs of the community, unanimous agreement was reached by the Building Committee that at a minimum renovation or expansion of the auditorium and restrooms are essentials which must be included in Phase Two. Renovation of the existing Cotsidas Auditorium and restrooms would allow rental for baptisms, weddings, memorial dinners, meetings and conferences. It would be a facility on par with a fine hotel’s which could be partitioned and divided into smaller rooms, used by young and old alike. If space and funding concerns are met we may even contemplate a multi functional auditorium and gymnasium such as has been done in other Greek Orthodox churches, most recently by St. John the Baptist in Las Vegas, Nevada." Dimitrios Vasiliadis Chairman Building Committee...

Father Greg's
Word of the Month

Frankincense

We know of frankincense as one of the three gifts brought by the Magi to the baby Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew. It is an intersting word, and we can easily pick out the word "incense" in it. The name literally means "Frankish Incense" because the Crusaders brought it to Europe during the Middle Ages. What is it called in the Bible, though? In the Old Testament Hebrew it is called Levonah, while in the New Testament we find the Greek word Livani, and in fact that is how we refer to the incense we use during church services. The root for these two terms comes from the name Lebanon, which is one of the places from which frankincense came. Lebanon itself gets its name from a Semitic root meaning "white" or "milk". This is in reference to its snow-peaked mountains. A folk etymology for the name of Lebanon is that it means "Land Of Yogurt". While this brings a smile - yogurt in Arabic is laban, and the country is certainly known for its yogurt - this is more of a tall tale than an account of the name's origin.
