The word angel comes from the Greek word for messenger. We chose to use the angels as our Levels of Donation because we are all messengers of God. Angels are spirits created by God before man. They are active spirits endowed with reason, will and knowledge; they serve God, fulfill the will of His Providence and praise Him.

The angels are grouped in nine orders (tagmata). The angels of the first sphere; Seraphim, Cherubim and Thrones are considered the heavenly counselors. The Seraphim are the highest order of angels, serving as the caretakers of God’s throne and continuously singing His praises. The Cerubim are beyond the Throne of God; they are the guardians of the light and stars. The Thrones are the carriers of the Throne of God.

The angels of the second sphere are the Dominions, Virtues and Powers. The Dominions dominate over the rest of the angels which follow behind them. They help man to rule over one’s will and be above all temptations. The Virtues send down the grace of miracle working to God’s Saints, the Virtues also bear the infirmities of the weak. The Powers have power over the devil and prevent deamons from harming man.

The angels of the third sphere are the Principalities, Archangels and Angels. The principalities have command over the lower angels, the management of the universe is entrusted to them. The Archangels are the heralds of good news. Their service consists in revealing prophesies, knowledge and understanding of God’s will. St. Gregory says that the Archangels strengthen
people in the holy faith. The angels are the closest to man.They announce the lesser mysteries and intensions of God, teach people how to live virtuously and righteously before God and they are appointed to guard each one of us who believe.
